Pune: The Mahatma Phule Mandai area, known for its historical significance, is experiencing increased footfall with the opening of the new Metro station.
However, the issues of encroachments, uncleanliness, disorganized parking, and traffic congestion persist outside the station, hampering the overall experience for commuters. In response, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has initiated efforts to address these challenges.
The underground Metro line from Shivajinagar Court to Swargate commenced operations recently, with a large number of commuters now traveling between Swargate and Mahatma Phule Mandai, as well as from Chinchwad to Mandai stations.
While the cleanliness inside the Mandai Metro station has been well-maintained, passengers are greeted by encroachments and traffic chaos as soon as they step outside.
Recognizing the need for change, PMC Commissioner Dr. Rajendra Bhosale has allocated Rs. 1.25 crore towards the restoration and maintenance of the Mandai area.
After conducting multiple inspections, Dr. Bhosale acknowledged the area's historic value and the necessity for proper planning to ensure both pedestrian convenience and business preservation.
“The presence of encroachments is causing inconvenience to commuters using the Metro. We will remove these encroachments and systematically reorganize them by department,” Dr. Bhosale stated.
He added that the PMC would also focus on repairing the rainwater drainage system and undertake other essential maintenance work to restore the area’s condition.
The Mandai area is set to benefit from a comprehensive plan that will ensure better organization, improved walkability, and enhanced preservation of its iconic structure.
