Pune: The supply of vegetables to Pune’s Gultekdi Market Yard has increased over the last week, with produce arriving from both within Maharashtra and neighboring states like Karnataka, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu.
Despite this, vegetable prices have risen due to supply not meeting the growing demand. Prices of essential vegetables such as potatoes, green chili, cluster beans, and bell pepper saw significant hikes.
On Sunday, around 90 trucks of vegetables were delivered to the market, including green chili and cabbage from Karnataka and Gujarat, beans from Karnataka, and carrots from Indore. The local produce included ginger from Satara, okra, tomatoes, and cluster beans from nearby regions.
As per Market Yard trader Vilas Bhujbal, the prices for some key vegetables per 10 kilograms are as follows: new onion at ₹250-350, potatoes at ₹250-370, garlic at ₹2,000-3,300, and green chili at ₹400-600.
These price increases reflect the gap between supply and demand, especially as key crops from other states are yet to arrive in larger quantities.
Meanwhile, the prices of leafy vegetables like coriander, fenugreek, and spinach have risen, while the rates for dill, spring onion, and radish have decreased slightly.
The fruit market has seen a dip in the prices of pomegranate, papaya, and guava, but lemons, watermelons, and muskmelons have become more expensive.
In the flower market, a 10% drop in prices was observed due to reduced demand, though prices are expected to rise in the coming days as Diwali approaches.
