Pune: A major accident involving ten vehicles occurred on the Warje Bridge along the Mumbai-Bangalore highway in Pune on Monday (September 2) evening, leading to significant vehicular damage but no reported injuries.
The incident took place at approximately 7:30 PM near Hyderabad Biryani, a well-known local landmark, and caused a considerable disruption in traffic flow.
The accident started when a Tata four-wheeler, traveling from Chandni Chowk, lost control and collided with another Maruti Swift car from behind.
This initial impact triggered a chain reaction, resulting in ten vehicles crashing into each other in a pile-up. Eyewitnesses reported that the vehicles were traveling closely due to heavy traffic conditions when the Tata car, unable to control its speed, initiated the collision sequence.
Despite the severity of the crash, there were no casualties. However, the vehicles involved sustained extensive damage. It took about thirty minutes for the Warje traffic police to arrive at the scene.
By the time they arrived, no highway or local traffic police were available to manage the situation, leaving the traffic congestion unattended for a considerable period. Upon their arrival, the traffic police acted swiftly, removing the damaged vehicles and restoring the flow of traffic.
This section of the Mumbai-Bangalore highway, particularly the stretch between Warje and Vadgaon, is notorious for traffic jams due to its narrow river bridge and numerous potholes, which contribute to slow-moving traffic.
Vehicles often travel closely, increasing the risk of such chain collisions. Local residents and commuters have frequently raised concerns about the road's condition, calling for immediate repairs and better traffic management to prevent such accidents in the future.
