Pune: In an unexpected turn of events, current MLA Sunil Shelke has alleged that certain individuals are actively trying to create a rift within Ajit Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and sideline the loyal workers who have supported Pawar.
Though Shelke has not named anyone directly, his remarks seem aimed at party leaders, particularly after recent statements by Bapu Bhegde, who expressed confidence about contesting the Maval Assembly seat.
Speaking on the matter, Shelke said that the leaders of the Mahayuti alliance will stand firm on their decision regarding the candidate for the Maval constituency.
Reflecting on the Lok Sabha elections, Shelke noted that their united efforts had resulted in a significant victory, but the decision on the Assembly candidate is still pending.
He reiterated his belief that the Maval seat should go to the NCP and that he, along with other leaders, is interested in the candidacy. However, Shelke stressed that he would not lobby for himself or visit anyone for the nomination, emphasizing that he respects the party's decision-making process.
Commenting on Bapu Bhegde's recent assertion about contesting the Maval seat, Shelke remarked, "There’s nothing wrong in being an aspirant. It’s a right granted by the constitution to every individual. However, we must all stand by the decision made by our party leadership."
He went on to express concern that certain factions are deliberately attempting to cause division within Ajit Pawar's group and isolate the workers who stand by Pawar.
Shelke warned that any such efforts to cause a split within the party would be publicly exposed, stating, "If anyone within the party stands against each other, I will reveal their names from the stage."
Shelke assured that they are working to maintain unity within the party, even if certain aspirants do not get the nomination. He firmly stated that no attempts to divide Ajit Pawar's loyalists will succeed.
Bapu Bhegde, who had recently voiced his intention to run for the Maval Assembly seat, had earlier commented, "I was given the position of Vice Chairman of the Corporation, but I don't need it. It should go to those who have requested it. I am confident that I will receive the Assembly ticket.
If the result is different, my workers from the NCP will come together to discuss and decide on our course of action."
