Pune: The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has issued a notice to the Ranjangaon Industrial Area’s common sewage treatment plant, pointing out serious flaws that have led to environmental pollution.
This notice comes amid similar action taken against the Kurkumbh Industrial Area last month, signaling growing concerns over sewage treatment practices in Maharashtra's industrial zones.
According to the notice issued by MPCB’s Regional Officer Jagannath Salunkhe, multiple operational issues have been detected within the Ranjangaon sewage treatment plant.
These issues include several non-functional mechanisms, an inactive online display board, and incomplete upgradation work at the plant. The board emphasized that these deficiencies are causing pollution in the surrounding environment and need immediate attention.
This latest action by MPCB follows a similar notice to the Kurkumbh Industrial Area on September 25, addressing ongoing water pollution problems reported by local residents.
Citizens in Kurkumbh had raised complaints about untreated industrial sewage being discharged into local streams, contaminating vital water sources.
In response, MPCB took formal steps to address various issues with the Kurkumbh sewage treatment plant, underscoring the urgent need for proper sewage management.
MIDC Responds to Notice
In light of MPCB’s actions, the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) has acknowledged the need for regulatory compliance and stated that corrective measures are underway.
MIDC sources reported that any identified shortcomings in the plant’s operations are being actively addressed. They also confirmed that an official response has been submitted to MPCB.
MPCB’s notice mandates a seven-day response period for the Ranjangaon MIDC and questions why strict legal action should not be initiated against the plant for its failure to uphold environmental standards.
