Pune: Manchar police arrested Mayur Sahebrao Mohite, nephew of Khed Taluka MLA Dilip Mohite Patil, in connection with the accident on the old Pune-Nashik National Highway near Ekalahare (Taluka Ambegaon), south of the Ghod River bridge.
The tragic accident which happened on Saturday (June 22) night at around 9:30 PM resulted in the death of 20-year-old Om alias Bunty Sunil Bhalerao. He was killed instantly when his two-wheeler was struck allegedly by Mayur's speeding Fortuner car.
The accident at Ekalahare enraged citizens, leading them to protest at the Manchar police station. Villagers claim that Mayur Mohite fled the scene instead of assisting after the accident, which fueled their anger. The crowd dispersed after the police detained the suspect and began the formalities of filing a case. A complaint was lodged by Om’s uncle, Nitin Ramchandra Bhalerao, at the Manchar police station.
According to reports, the speeding Fortuner (MH.14 KJ.7557) was traveling from Kalamb village towards Manchar and collided with Om’s two-wheeler while attempting to overtake a pickup truck from the opposite direction. The impact threw Om ten to twelve feet from the road, causing severe head injuries and significant bleeding. He also suffered serious injuries to his left eye, mouth, lips, and chin.
Local residents, along with Shubham Bhalerao, Sachin Vayal, and Shailesh Bhalerao, rushed Om to the Manchar Sub-District Hospital in an ambulance, but doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.
Om was cremated on Sunday morning in Kalamb village, attended by a large crowd. Police were deployed as a precaution. Om, the only son in the Bhalerao family, leaves behind his parents and sister. The incident has plunged Kalamb village into mourning.
Khed Division’s Sub-Divisional Police Officer Sudarshan Patil inspected the accident site, while Assistant Police Constable Santosh Mandave from Manchar police station is leading the ongoing investigation.
