Pune: The weather department has forecast heavy rainfall over the next five days for the coastal districts of Maharashtra, as well as Kolhapur and Satara. Light showers are expected in other parts of the state.

According to the weather department, a low-pressure area has developed along the coast from South Gujarat to Karnataka. This is expected to bring significant rainfall to the coastal and Western Ghats regions over the next five days, while the rest of the state is likely to experience light showers. An orange alert has been issued for Sindhudurg, Kolhapur, and Satara districts for Friday, July 5, indicating heavy rainfall.

Retired meteorologist Manikrao Khule explained that the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) weather system is currently moving through the equatorial region.

This system will pass through India's maritime areas between June 27 and July 10, intensifying the monsoon rains. The MJO has now entered the Bay of Bengal, strengthening the monsoon branch in that area. Consequently, Vidarbha and Marathwada regions might see an increase in rainfall intensity.
