New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid his respect to Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj on his birth anniversary on Friday. Shivaji Maharaj’s birth anniversary, Shiv Jayanti, is celebrated with fervour in the western state where the 17th-century ruler is a huge cultural and historic icon.

Prime Minister Modi in a tweet shared a video stressing the inspiration the Maratha king has had on millions of Indians. He paid tribute to Shivaji Maharaj, saying that the Maratha king’s exemplary bravery will light the way for Indians for the upcoming generation. PM Modi’s tweet read, “I pay my respects to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the immortal son of Mother Bharati, on his birth anniversary. The saga of his indomitable courage, amazing valor and extraordinary intelligence will continue to inspire the countrymen for ages. Jai Shivaji!”

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also praised Maharashtra’s largest cultural icon by thanking him for familiarising the culture of public welfare services in the country.

Every year, Shiv Jayanti, the birth anniversary of the iconic Maratha emperor is celebrated on February 19 with great fervour in Maharashtra and other neighbouring states.

Earlier in the day, Maharashtra Chief Minister along with Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar visited Shivneri Fort to pay homage to Shivaji Maharaj.
