Pune: Incidents of accidents have increased due to vehicles entering no-entry zones and driving on the wrong side. Many people have lost their lives in such accidents. Meanwhile, the traffic department of Pimpri-Chinchwad police is taking action against the unruly drivers violating the rules.
Following this, action against drivers taking their vehicles through no-entry zones intensified. Between January and July 2024, action was taken against 51,184 drivers, and a hefty fine of ₹4 crore 60 lakh 21 thousand 500 was collected.
Despite such large-scale action, it appears that unruly drivers are not learning their lesson. It seems they have adopted the mentality of "we'll pay the fine, but we'll drive through no-entry zones."
On Monday (July 29), despite private vehicles being banned from the BRT lane, a school bus and a car collided head-on in the BRT lane. Two students in the school bus were injured in this serious incident.
This prompted the traffic department to take extensive action. Campaigns were conducted in various traffic divisions under the commissioner's office to discipline unruly drivers. This campaign will continue in the future.
Case Filed Against Car and Bus Drivers
In connection with the accident between the school bus and the car on Monday (29th) in the BRT lane near Chinchwad Auto Cluster, the Pimpri police have filed a case against both the car driver and the bus driver.
The accused are car driver Yash Arun Mittal (29, resident of Bhel Chowk, Pradhikaran, Nigdi) and Podar International School bus driver Yogesh Eknath Khodke (28, resident of Shastri Chowk, Bhosari).
Despite private vehicles not being permitted in the BRT lane, both the school bus driver and the car driver were recklessly and speedily driving, leading to the head-on collision. Bus driver Khodke drove the bus through the BRT lane without permission.
A case has been filed against both. Their medical examination has been conducted, and blood samples have been sent for testing. Senior Police Inspector Ashok Kadlag stated that the report is yet to be received and further investigation is ongoing.
Action in the Last Seven Months
Between January and July 2024, action was taken against 51,184 drivers for taking their vehicles through no-entry zones, collecting a fine of ₹4 crore 60 lakh 21 thousand 500. Additionally, 3,359 actions were taken against those driving on the wrong side.
Special Campaign
Due to traffic congestion and accidents caused by vehicles entering no-entry zones and driving in the wrong direction, a special campaign is being conducted to take action against such unruly drivers from July 28 to August 6, 2024. All department officers have been instructed accordingly.
