Pune: The long-standing demand for a dedicated burn unit in the city has gained renewed urgency in light of frequent fire incidents. The need for such a facility has been discussed in the legislative assembly, and although the process to establish a burn ward has begun, it remains in the planning stages.

The city is home to numerous companies and a range of housing from slums to multi-crore bungalows, as well as street stalls and five-star hotels. The population is increasing, and fires are occurring in both residential and industrial areas.

Some incidents result in injuries, while others lead to fatalities. Injured individuals are initially treated at the Yashwantrao Chavan Municipal Hospital and then referred to Sassoon General Hospital.

Due to the distance from Sassoon and the frequency of fire incidents in the city, there has been a continuous demand for a dedicated burn hospital or ward.

Last year, an explosion while making sparkler candles at a company in Talawade resulted in the deaths of 14 women, intensifying the demand for a burn ward.

The issue was also raised during the winter session of the legislative assembly. Subsequently, the municipal administration began taking steps. However, no independent hospital or ward has been established yet.

Dr. Lakshman Gofane, Health Medical Officer, Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation stated, "The plan is to start the burn unit in the old Talera Hospital building in Chinchwad. The design has been prepared, and a consultant has been appointed. Once the new Talera Hospital is operational, the burn unit will be transferred from the old building."
