Pune: Om Nitin Gaikwad, a young resident of the Kashewadi slum in Bhavani Peth, has defied all odds to secure a place at St. Olaf College in Minnesota, United States of America, where he will pursue a Bachelor's degree in Liberal Arts. This remarkable achievement has made him a source of pride for the entire Kashewadi community.
Om grew up in a challenging environment marked by overcrowded conditions, poor infrastructure, and limited access to basic amenities.
Despite these hardships, Om's dedication to his studies never wavered. After losing his father at a young age, he was raised by his mother, grandmother, and sister. His mother, who works as a helper at his school, played a crucial role in supporting his education.
Om excelled academically, scoring 89% in his 10th-grade exams at the Akanksha Foundation's Savitribai Phule English Medium School. His academic journey took a significant turn when he gained admission to UWC Mahindra College, where he spent two transformative years. The experience not only provided him with an excellent education but also helped him grow into a well-rounded individual.
Now, Om is set to embark on a new journey to the United States, having been awarded the prestigious Davis Scholarship worth ₹64 lakhs per year for the next four years. However, he has expressed the need for additional financial assistance to cover various expenses related to his education.
Om's success has sparked admiration and respect throughout the Kashewadi community. As the first student from the area to pursue higher education abroad, he has become an inspiration to many, with locals hailing him as a role model for future generations.
