Pune: The Maharashtra government has approved an extensive development plan worth ₹305.63 crores aimed at upgrading several pilgrimage sites across the state.
A significant portion of this allocation, ₹129.49 crores, is dedicated to enhancing facilities at the Shri Vitthal-Rukmini Temple in Pandharpur, one of the most revered religious sites in India.
The plan, approved during a meeting of the state-level apex committee chaired by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, includes the construction of a modern darshan pavilion and an organized queue system for devotees.
Pandharpur attracts millions of devotees, especially during the Ashadhi and Kartik Wari festivals. To accommodate the massive footfall and ensure a smoother experience, the new pavilion will be constructed over 16,000 square meters.
It will have two levels and can host up to 6,000 devotees at a time. The project will introduce a time-based token system, which will regulate the entry of devotees for darshan of Lord Vitthal and Goddess Rukmini, reducing waiting time and preventing overcrowding.
The pavilion will also feature special arrangements for disabled persons, senior citizens, and mothers with young children, ensuring accessibility and comfort for all.
The entire darshan experience will be managed through a well-organized token-based entry system, along with a one-kilometer skywalk-style queue, designed to streamline the flow of pilgrims.
This system will not only make darshan safer and more comfortable but will also prevent the typical disruption caused to local residents due to long queues.
Further, the pavilion will be equipped with essential amenities such as drinking water, restrooms, lifts, and medical services. Meals will also be provided to pilgrims through an on-site food center.
The development project is expected to provide a major upgrade to the darshan process, ensuring that devotees can have a serene and seamless experience.
