Pune: Despite the recent heavy rainfall over the past four days in the dam's catchment area, which has filled Pavana Dam to 49.30 per cent capacity, the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has announced that the alternate-day water supply schedule will remain unchanged.

This dam, essential for quenching the thirst of Pimpri-Chinchwad residents, now holds enough water to last for the next six months. However, the decision to continue with the current water supply regime means residents will still have to wait for a daily water supply.

Pavana Dam is the primary water source for Pimpri-Chinchwad and several villages in the Maval region. Due to a prolonged dry spell, the water level in the dam had previously dropped to 17 per cent.

Smaller dams in the Maval area, such as Andra, Wadivale, and Tata, were also nearing their minimum capacity. The recent rainfall has significantly increased the water level in these reservoirs.

Since June 1, the dam's catchment area has received 1077 mm of rainfall, boosting the water storage by 31.87 per cent. With the dam now at 49.30 per cent capacity, the water supply for the next six months is secured, yet daily water supply remains a future goal.

Alternate-Day Water Supply Continues for Over Four Years

The PCMC initiated the alternate-day water supply on November 25, 2019, citing equitable water distribution as the reason. This temporary measure has now extended indefinitely. For the past four and a half years, residents of Pimpri-Chinchwad have been coping with this schedule.

Although there is a strong demand from citizens for daily water supply, the administration maintains that the alternate-day schedule ensures sufficient water availability and has reduced the number of water-related complaints.
