Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has taken a significant step towards the construction of India’s first-ever Constitution Building and Vipassana Center by initiating the tender process.
The e-tender for the project’s first phase was released on October 1, with a total estimated cost of ₹2.53 crore. The deadline for submission of tenders is set for October 8, and the bids will be opened the following day.
The ambitious project is set to be built in Chikhali, in Authority Area No. 11 of Pimpri-Chinchwad, on a plot spanning 25,894 square meters. This land was handed over to PCMC by the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) on July 23.
Located about a kilometer from the Shri Nageshwar Maharaj Submarket Committee near Moshi on the Pune-Nashik Highway, the site is well-connected to surrounding areas, making it convenient for visitors to access the facility.
This Constitution Building, dedicated to the promotion and study of the Indian Constitution and other democratic constitutions from around the world, will serve as a hub for legal, academic, and civic activities.
It is also intended to spread awareness about the vision of Bharat Ratna Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, who was instrumental in drafting the Indian Constitution.
The accompanying Vipassana Center will provide a space for meditation and self-reflection, promoting a balance between mental well-being and civic education.
The project, which has been long in the making, owes its progress to the efforts of MLA Mahesh Landge. He had been advocating for the construction of the building and personally pushed the proposal to Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.
Due to PMRDA’s inability to execute the project, Landge requested the land’s transfer to PCMC, which was subsequently approved by the Chief Minister, clearing the way for the building’s construction.
PCMC’s City Engineer, Makarand Nikam, confirmed that the tender process is underway and that once completed, work orders will be issued. The construction is expected to take approximately three years.
“This is a prestigious project for Pimpri-Chinchwad, as it will house the country’s first-ever Constitution Building,” Nikam added.
