Plastic Ban on Academic Campuses, Including Universities

Pune, No university and college in the country will be able to use plastic anymore. In order to curb the increasing use of plastic, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has now taken a policy decision to ban plastic in universities and academic campuses.

The move is part of the 'Swachhata Hi Seva' campaign. From an environmental point of view, the central government is taking steps to ban plastic at the national level.

In view of this, the University Grants Commission has also issued guidelines regarding banning plastic in educational campuses.

The guidelines issued by the Commission will be applicable in all higher education institutions in the country. The commission aims to promote 'plastic-free premises and cleanliness'.

The commission has also suggested that a 'plastic-free' campaign should be implemented in educational campuses with the participation of students.

Guidelines on 'plastic ban'
- A complete ban on single-use plastic in restaurants (canteens), shopping places and premises of institutions in educational complexes
- Organizing awareness workshops, activities to prevent the use of plastic
- Students should avoid the use of biodegradable plastics
- Initiatives for 'plastic-free' areas
- Providing alternative arrangements to prevent the use of plastic

Dr. Parag Kalkar, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Savitribai Phule Pune University said, "Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) has been implementing the 'Plastic Ban' initiative for a few years now. However, a detailed review will now be conducted by the University of Pune as per the guidelines issued by the University Grants Commission.

Also, positive steps will be taken regarding plastic ban on university campuses and affiliated colleges with a view to protecting the environment."
