Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is witnessing a growing preference among women for deliveries at its government hospitals, attributed to the availability of free childbirth services.
While private hospitals charge hefty fees for childbirth, particularly cesarean sections, PMC’s 19 maternity centers and Kamla Nehru Hospital offer these services at no cost, making them accessible to a larger population.
According to data from the last two and a half years, government hospitals in Pune recorded 69,283 births compared to 68,613 in private hospitals, with 670 more women choosing government facilities.
PMC’s facilities, such as the Chandumama Sonawane Maternity Home in Bhawani Peth and Kamla Nehru Hospital, provide comprehensive maternity services.
From tetanus vaccinations to blood tests, free cesarean operations, and neonatal care, pregnant women benefit from a wide range of services. Schemes like Janani Suraksha and Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana add further support, contributing to the increased confidence in PMC hospitals.
PMC’s proactive healthcare initiatives also ensure vaccinations, diabetes screenings, HIV tests, and other essential services are available, providing a complete maternal care system for expecting mothers.
Dr. Rajesh Dighe, Maternal and Child Care Officer, Pune Municipal Corporation Health Department said, "In recent times, pregnant women have shown increased trust in PMC hospitals due to the availability of free services like vaccinations, prenatal tests, and maternity care. The PMC’s comprehensive approach to maternal and infant health has made government facilities more appealing."
