Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has taken extensive measures to safeguard residents as heavy rains continue to lash Pune city. As of 6pm on Sunday (August 25), 14000 cusecs of water is being released from the Khadakwasla dam into Mutha river.

Following a red alert issued on August 24, 2024, in the city's ghat regions, the PMC, under the leadership of the Municipal Commissioner and Additional Municipal Commissioner, activated all relevant departments to prepare for potential emergencies.

With the Khadakwasla Dam expected to release up to 35,000 cusecs of water due to the heavy downpour, the PMC coordinated closely with the District Collector’s office and the Irrigation Department to ensure prompt action. In anticipation of the water release, citizens were advised to avoid parking vehicles and tying animals near the riverbanks.

The PMC has designated 41 flood-prone locations, where nearby schools and halls have been prepared as shelters. Teams have been organized to provide meals, drinking water, and other essential services to affected residents.

The Health Department, Solid Waste Management, Swachh Bharat Mission, and Disaster Management teams are on high alert, with preparations also made in vulnerable areas such as Ekta Nagar, Patil Estate Slum, Pulachi Wadi, Omkareshwar Temple, Bhide Bridge, and Shivane Bridge.

Bridge closures will be implemented based on the volume of water released:

  • Shivane Bridge at 11,000-15,000 cusecs

  • Bhide Bridge at 15,000-18,000 cusecs

  • Tilak Bridge at over 32,000 cusecs

The PMC is fully prepared to respond to all emergencies, with constant coordination with the NDRF, Army, and District Collector’s office. Citizens are urged to contact the Disaster Management Cell at 020-25501269 or 020-25506800 for assistance, with a Deputy Commissioner appointed to manage the 24-hour control room.
