Pune: The Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) has seen a significant increase in revenue thanks to the adoption of an advanced QR code ticketing system.
Since the system's implementation in October 2023, PMPML has been generating around ₹2 crore monthly from passengers in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad.
This modern ticketing method has not only increased convenience for commuters but also reduced disputes over change.
Similar to the metro system, PMPML has introduced an online ticketing service. However, this service initially faced several issues, such as tickets not being generated, payments getting stuck, and cash being demanded even after purchasing a ticket, leading to its failure.
Passengers were avoiding bus travel due to these issues with the online ticketing system. However, the administration has successfully resolved these problems, making online ticketing more convenient.
PMPML administration has reported an increase in the percentage of revenue generated through QR code payments. This system was launched in October 2023.
Initially, it was well received by passengers, but technical issues and the challenges faced by conductors in issuing tickets through the new system caused disruptions.
Since May 2024, with the technical issues resolved, usage and revenue have increased. In May 2024, the monthly income from the online service reached ₹1.08 crore.
By the end of July, four percent of total tickets were issued online. This month, the revenue was the highest in the past nine months, reaching ₹1.95 crore.
