Pune: Esteemed Marathi writer and professor Dr. Veena Vijay Dev, recognized for her extensive contributions to writing, compilation, and editing, passed away on Tuesday (October 29) in Pune at the age of 75.
Daughter of the celebrated Marathi writer Go. Ni. Dandekar, Dr. Dev leaves behind a legacy of literary accomplishments. She is survived by her daughters, including actress Mrinal Kulkarni, as well as her sons-in-law and grandchildren.
Born on November 26, 1948, Dr. Veena Dev was immersed in Marathi literature from a young age, influenced by her father’s profound literary background.
She married Dr. Vijay Dev in 1967 and dedicated 32 years to teaching Marathi at Shahu Mandir College, retiring as the head of the department.
A versatile literary figure, Dr. Dev published several works that spanned various forms, including essay collections such as Kadhikadhi, Partoni Pahe, Strirang, Vibhram, and Swansiche Divas.
She also authored Smarane Gonidanchi, a memoir on her father’s life and legacy, and her biographical work Ashak Mast Fakir, depicting Go. Ni. Dandekar, earned her the State Government Award for Outstanding Literary Creation.
Dr. Dev received numerous other honors, including the Morya Gosavi Lifetime Achievement Award and the Sairang Pratishthan Excellence Award.
Dr. Dev organized over 650 public readings of her father’s novels, celebrating his work and memory. She was instrumental in launching initiatives like the Mrunmayee Awards, the Fort Literature Conferences, and photographic exhibitions.
Through her Mrunmayee Publications, she ensured the continued availability of her father’s rare and influential works to Marathi literature enthusiasts.
