Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad on High Alert as Dams Reach Maximum Capacity

Pune: Following the onset of the retreating monsoon, Pune and its surrounding regions have been hit by continuous heavy rains over the past two days.

This torrential rainfall has significantly impacted the dam catchment areas, leading to a critical situation where all five dams supplying water to Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad are now filled to 100% capacity.

As a result of this situation, the Water Resources Department has announced an increase in water discharge from the Mula-Mutha and Pavana rivers.

Officials have issued a stern warning to residents living near the riverbanks, advising them to be on high alert for potential flooding in the coming days.

In an official statement, the Khadakwasla Irrigation Department disclosed that the Khadakwasla dam is filled to 90.39% of its capacity, while the Panshet, Varasgaon, and Temghar dams have all reached 100%.

The Pavana dam, which caters to the Pimpri-Chinchwad region, is also at full capacity. This has heightened concerns about the possibility of floods in both Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad if the rains continue.

According to the India Meteorological Department’s forecast, heavy rains are expected between 24th and 29th September 2024.

The increased rainfall is likely to cause significant water release into the Mula and Pavana rivers, potentially overwhelming their banks. Authorities have cautioned that the discharge volume may be adjusted based on further rainfall predictions.

Residents of low-lying areas along the riverbanks are particularly vulnerable and are being urged to take necessary precautions.

The civic authorities have advised citizens in the Pune Municipal Corporation areas to stay away from the Mutha riverbed, while those in Pimpri-Chinchwad should avoid entering the restricted (Blue Line) areas near the Pavana riverbed.

Any belongings or livestock located near the rivers should be moved to higher ground as a precautionary measure.
