Pune: In a startling incident, a truck repairing a sewage pipeline sank into a 25-foot-deep pit within the City Post Office premises at Belbaug Chowk in Pune. The incident occurred on Friday (September 20) afternoon at around 4:15 p.m. Fortunately, no one was injured.
The City Post Office, located near Belbaug Chowk, has been the site of ongoing repairs by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) following complaints about faulty sewage pipelines.
On Friday, a contractor’s truck, along with several workers, arrived at the location to conduct maintenance on the sewage system.
The workers had just begun repairing the chamber when the ground beneath the truck began to give way. Within minutes, a large pit formed, and the entire truck was pulled into the ground, leaving only the truck’s cabin visible above the surface.
Miraculously, the driver was able to escape unscathed by jumping out of the truck moments before it was engulfed. After the incident, water began to accumulate in the pit, raising concerns about potential flooding in the area.
The fire department was immediately alerted, and a team led by Officer Suhas Jadhav rushed to the site to manage the situation. Efforts were quickly undertaken to remove the truck from the pit.
The accident has left local residents in shock as the truck’s complete disappearance into the ground has drawn attention to the condition of the city's infrastructure.
Municipal authorities are expected to investigate the cause of the ground collapse and take necessary measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
