Pune: In response to an imminent heavy rainfall warning issued by the India Meteorological Department, district authorities in Pune have declared a holiday for all schools and colleges in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad on Thursday (September 26).
The decision was made late Wednesday (night) by District Collector Dr. Suhas Divase, who issued an official order prioritizing the safety of students amidst the forecast of severe weather conditions.
The weather department has predicted thunderstorms accompanied by heavy rain in Pune tomorrow, raising concerns about potential flooding and waterlogging.
Given the intensity of the forecast, the district administration decided to close educational institutions for the day as a precautionary measure. Dr. Divse emphasized that the safety of students was the primary reason for this decision.
On Wednesday, the city experienced a heavy downpour that lasted for three hours, causing widespread disruption. Several low-lying areas were submerged, leading to waterlogging that made travel difficult for many citizens.
Key roads, including Baner Road, University Road, and parts of Shivajinagar, witnessed severe traffic congestion, with vehicles moving at a snail's pace from afternoon until late at night. The rainfall crippled traffic flow, and many commuters were stuck in gridlock for hours.
Given the red alert for heavy rain on Thursday (September 26), the district authorities are expecting a similar situation to unfold. To avoid putting students at risk and to reduce the number of people commuting during hazardous weather conditions, the decision to close schools and colleges was taken.
Officials are closely monitoring the situation, and the administration has urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel and stay indoors during the storm.
The Pune Municipal Corporation is also working to address drainage issues in flood-prone areas to prevent further complications. Emergency services have been put on high alert to respond to any incidents caused by the expected heavy rainfall.
