Pune: As preparations intensify for the upcoming Assembly elections, political parties are navigating internal disagreements and candidate shifts. The Congress party has confirmed its intention to contest three of Pune’s eight Assembly seats: Cantonment, Shivajinagar, and Kasba Peth.
In a strategic move, the party has begun identifying new candidates for these constituencies, with Avinash Salve, previously affiliated with the Shiv Sena Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray (UBT) faction, joining Congress to potentially represent the Pune Cantonment constituency.
Salve, a seasoned politician with experience across multiple parties, has served four terms as a corporator in the Pune Municipal Corporation. His political journey includes roles with the RPI Gavai faction, Congress, and most recently, Shiv Sena.
In addition to his political experience, Salve is well-versed in the Ambedkarite movement. He claims widespread support from Cantonment constituency corporators as he transitions into the Congress fold.
In a recent media interaction, Salve shared that his switch to Congress was facilitated by the promise of a nomination for the Cantonment constituency in the upcoming elections.
He emphasized that despite joining Congress, he remains committed to the broader Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance. Salve also acknowledged the support of senior Shiv Sena leaders, who approved his decision to change parties.
A total of 24 candidates have expressed their interest in running across seven Assembly constituencies in Pune city. Among these constituencies, Pune Cantonment has emerged as the most sought-after seat, attracting the interest of 10 potential candidates.
