Pune: In a recent checkpoint incident in Pune’s Kalyaninagar area, Yerawada police have charged a drunk driver, Chirag Rajendra Mundada, with assaulting a police constable during a routine traffic inspection.

The incident took place near Bishop School around midnight on Friday (October 25).

The operation was part of a citywide campaign initiated by Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar to maintain road safety by targeting drunk and reckless drivers.

Under the directive, checkpoints have been established nightly at 27 key points in Pune, where officers inspect vehicles for violations. These checkpoints are set up between 11 p.m. and 3 a.m., with over 125 police officers participating in the enforcement effort.

Constable Sandeep Khandagale from the Yerawada Traffic Branch was on duty with his colleagues at the checkpoint in Kalyaninagar when he stopped Mundada’s vehicle for a routine inspection.

Mundada, found to be intoxicated, resisted the check, snatching the mobile device from Constable Khandagale and pushing him during the altercation.

Further investigation confirmed that Mundada was driving under the influence of alcohol. Following the incident, a complaint was lodged by Constable Khandagale at the Yerawada Police Station, leading to the registration of a case against Mundada for obstruction of government duty. Assistant Police Inspector Lamkhede is overseeing the investigation.

In response to increasing concerns over reckless driving, the nightly checkpoint campaign aims to instill discipline among drivers across Pune’s city and suburban areas.
