Pune: A Nigerian national, identified as Chidiebere Moses Ogbodo, has been arrested by the Sangvi Police for residing illegally in Pune for the past eight years.
He had also fraudulently obtained a voter ID and PAN card and had recently applied for an Aadhaar card in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh.
The case came to light when he submitted an application for police verification at the Pimpri Chinchwad Police Commissionerate, revealing the illegal activities.
Ogbodo initially arrived in India on a student visa, which expired eight years ago. Instead of applying for an extension, he stayed without a valid permit and was also involved in business activities, which is a violation of Indian visa regulations.
Foreign nationals are prohibited from engaging in business without appropriate authorization.
The fraud was uncovered when Ogbodo submitted several documents for police verification, including a Pune-based voter ID and PAN card, along with an application for an Aadhaar card.
Upon investigating the documents, the police found them to be fake. He was subsequently arrested for defrauding the Indian government, and further investigations are being conducted by Police Sub-Inspector Bhalerao.
Earlier, Pimpri police had booked a lawyer and his accomplice on charges of misusing Aadhaar card of a resident in Bhosari to secure bail for Bangladeshi nationals who were caught for illegal infiltration.
The fraudulent bail attempt was carried out at Pimpri Court on April 30, 2024 between 10:30am and 6pm before the court of a Judicial Magistrate (First Class).
