Pune railway station is gearing up for an influx of travelers during the Diwali festival, with estimates suggesting that around 200,000 to 250,000 passengers are expected to travel in a single day.
This surge in passenger traffic is particularly pronounced on trains bound for northern India, including popular destinations such as Danapur, Gorakhpur, and Lucknow. In response, the railway administration is implementing special measures to effectively manage the anticipated crowd.
As part of these arrangements, the railway authorities will provide designated seating for general class passengers near the 'VIP siding' area of the station.
To ensure safety and order, personnel from the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and ticket inspectors will be stationed at the entrances of each train coach. A specialized team will also be formed to oversee these efforts.
To further accommodate the growing number of travelers, the railway administration plans to increase the number of ticket windows at reservation counters and those for current ticket purchases. This initiative aims to enhance the convenience of passengers at the station.
Pune station typically sees a daily average of around 150,000 travelers, a figure that significantly rises during the Diwali season. This year, the railway authorities have arranged for additional trains to manage the increase in demand; however, reservations for these extra services have already reached full capacity.
To alleviate congestion and improve service, the number of ticket counters and current ticket windows will be expanded. Additionally, more Automatic Ticket Vending Machines (ATVMs) will be installed to minimize waiting times for general ticket purchasers. A help desk that operates 24 hours a day will also be established to assist passengers with inquiries and concerns.
Notably, the highest concentration of passengers traveling from Pune station is to destinations like Danapur, Lucknow, and Gorakhpur, where many of the travelers are laborers.
Those unable to secure reserved tickets typically opt for general tickets, resulting in overcrowding in the general compartments.
The railway administration is implementing a systematic approach, allowing general class passengers to board the coaches in an orderly manner to prevent conflicts over seating.
Dr. Milind Hirve, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager of Pune, emphasized, "Special measures have been put in place to manage passenger crowds during Diwali.
In addition to providing separate seating arrangements, we are committed to ensuring the timely operation of trains. Continuous monitoring of the station's crowd dynamics will also be maintained."
