Pune: Following the Kalyani Nagar accident, the Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO) administration initiated an enforcement drive starting May 22. So far, 59 drivers have been caught driving under the influence, and 11 vehicles have been seized for being on the road without proper registration. However, the pace of enforcement has slowed down in June due to changes in RTO officials.

In the Kalyani Nagar accident, it was discovered that the vehicle involved was being driven without proper registration. Consequently, the RTO began a crackdown on May 22, targeting drunk driving, underage driving, and driving unregistered vehicles. Despite these efforts, the number of actions taken has been significantly low, particularly from June 1 onwards. The enforcement drive further dwindled after the transfer of RTO officers on June 6.

The enforcement team of RTO continues to implement the Motor Vehicle Act in various parts of the city. Dealers have been issued notices for providing unregistered vehicles to customers, asking, "Why should your trade certificate not be canceled?" Further action will be determined based on the responses received.

“This enforcement will continue consistently,” stated Archana Gaikwad, Regional Transport Officer, Pune.

The Pune RTO had initiated stringent action against those caught over-speeding or driving unregistered vehicles in the city after the tragic Porsche car accident on Kalyani Nagar Road on May 18, involving a minor and resulting in the deaths of two young tech professionals from Madhya Pradesh.

RTO in Action

22 May to 31 May

  • Drunk Driving cases - 52

  • Without registration vehicle cases - 11

  • Underage driver cases - 2

22 May to June 17

  • Drunk Driving cases - 59

  • Without registration vehicle cases - 11

  • Underage driver cases - 3

The RTO had previously announced that notices would be sent to vehicle dealers in cases of unregistered vehicles, with the possibility of canceling their business licenses.

Additionally, the RTO had apprehended three underage drivers. These minors were sent to court for further legal procedures, and notices had been issued to their parents for allowing them to drive.
