Pune: The Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO) has intensified its crackdown on two-wheeler riders failing to comply with helmet regulations. Between April 1 and October 31, 2024, the RTO penalized nearly 10,000 riders and collected fines totaling ₹44.57 lakh.
Helmet Rule Enforcement Reignites Debate
The action gained momentum after the government mandated helmet use for all employees commuting to government offices. This directive has sparked renewed discussions about helmet safety and compliance among commuters.
October Crackdown Yields ₹10.29 Lakh in Fines
In October alone, the RTO’s Air Patrol Team inspected 4,165 vehicles. Of these, 2,175 two-wheeler riders were found without helmets and were fined. The total penalty collected in October was ₹10.29 lakh, with each violation attracting a fine of ₹500.
Campaign in Government Offices
Under orders from Divisional Commissioner Dr. Chandrakant Pulkundwar, the RTO has launched a focused campaign targeting two-wheeler riders entering government offices without helmets. Four special teams have been formed for the drive.
In the first phase, the campaign focused on key offices, including the Divisional Commissioner’s Office, Pune Municipal Corporation, District Collectorate, and Zilla Parishad.
Regional Transport Officer Archana Gaikwad announced plans to extend the campaign to cover all government offices in the second phase.
“The helmet mandate is essential for ensuring safety. Strict enforcement will continue across all government offices to promote compliance,” said Gaikwad.
