Pune: In a significant step towards inclusive elections, the Pune district administration has introduced a dedicated video call facility for deaf and speech-impaired voters to ensure they do not miss out on their right to vote.
This service, launched specifically for the upcoming Assembly elections, provides assistance in sign language to help voters locate their names in the electoral roll and find their polling stations.
According to district officials, 52 deaf and speech-impaired individuals have already availed themselves of this service, which reflects the administration’s focus on making elections accessible for all.
Dr. Suhas Divase, the District Election Officer and District Collector of Pune, highlighted the importance of the initiative, saying, "Our goal is to ensure that every eligible voter, including senior citizens, blind individuals, and deaf and speech-impaired voters, can easily access their voting rights. The video call service helps deaf and speech-impaired individuals find their names on the voter list through assistance from experts in sign language."
The facility provides a specific mobile number (922636002) that deaf and speech-impaired voters can use to make video calls, where two specially appointed teachers offer sign language support during office hours.
This service aims to facilitate a seamless experience for voters who would otherwise face communication barriers during the election process.
Alongside this initiative, Pune’s district administration is also implementing a range of supportive measures for senior citizens, people with disabilities, and those with health conditions, reaffirming its commitment to inclusive and accessible elections.
