Pune Traffic Police ban heavy vehicle movement on Gangadham Road

After the trial phase is over and based on citizens feedback, traffic police will take a decision on permanently banning movement of heavy vehicles on Gangadham road.

Pune: Traffic Police have banned movement of heavy vehicles on the Gangadham Road in Marketyard area. The Gangadham road, which has several townships and schools, colleges in vicinity, connects Katraj-Kondhwa Road and Bibvewadi Road. DCP Traffic Rohidas Pawar issued the ban order on Thursday (June 20) evening.

The ban on heavy vehicle movement has been issued on temporary basis for 15 days. Pune Traffic Police have urged citizens to send their suggestions and feedback regarding this ban till July 5, 2024. Citizens can send their feedback to the Office of Deputy Commissioner of Police, Traffic Control Branch, Yerawada Post Office, Bungalow No. 6, Jail Road.

Rajya Sabha MP Medha Kulkarni had written to the Pune City Police Commissioner insisting on the strict enforcement of the ban on heavy vehicles on Gangadham Road. "In spite of the ban, heavy vehicles are seen plying on the city roads. The accident near Gangadham Chowk happened because heavy vehicles were allowed where they are prohibited,” Kulkarni had posted on X after a tragic accident on Gangadham road on June 12.

A 59-year-old woman, Damayanti Bhupendra Solanki, a resident of Kondhwa, riding pillion was killed after her bike was hit from behind by a speeding dumper truck near Gangadham Chowk in this accident. The driver of the truck was arrested by Marketyard police. The 33-year-old daughter-in-law Priyanka Rahul Solanki, of the deceased had also sustained critical injuries.

Local citizens had protested against the plying of heavy vehicles on Gangadham road and urged police to take action against speeding vehicles. The trader community in Marketyard police had also voiced its concern about commuter safety after the tragic accident.
