Pune Traffic Police are set to leverage Google's intelligence to tackle the city's traffic woes by analyzing traffic patterns through Google's data. Correspondence with Google has already been initiated in this regard, and a formal agreement will be established soon.

In an effort to address the growing traffic problems in Pune, the traffic police have decided to utilize Google’s expertise. The state’s Law and Justice Department has recently given the green light for Pune Police to enter into an agreement with Google, as confirmed by a senior police officer.

Pune Police force consists of approximately 10,000 personnel, with only 900 to 950 assigned to the traffic branch. The city has around 250 main traffic signals, but many intersections lack signals, highlighting the need for technological support to manage traffic effectively.

Throughout the day, Pune experiences various traffic phases, from school, college, and office commuters in the morning to their return journeys in the evening. Market areas have their own peak times. A scientific analysis of these traffic patterns will be conducted with Google’s assistance.

Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar stated, “We are collaborating with Google to apply scientific methods to resolve the city’s traffic issues. The legal process for this partnership is being finalized.”

How Google Will Help

Google will provide detailed information on where and when traffic congestion occurs in the city. This includes identifying traffic patterns, such as what happens on side streets when a main road is congested, and the number of vehicles involved during these times.

Using Google to Optimize Signal Timings

With comprehensive traffic data from Google, traffic police will be able to adjust signal timings based on real-time conditions. This will help manage traffic more efficiently, particularly on roads prone to congestion.

Key Benefits of Google's Assistance

  • Traffic Speed Analysis: Real-time data on traffic speeds on various city roads.

  • Congestion Timing: Information on which roads are congested and at what times.

  • Vehicle Count: Data on the number of vehicles present during congestion periods.

  • Alternative Routes: Suggestions for alternative routes during ongoing roadwork.
