Pune’s Iconic Shaniwar Wada Included in 'Adopt a Heritage' Scheme

Pune: The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has unveiled a new scheme aimed at the preservation and adoption of heritage sites, sparking a wave of reactions across Pune.

Among the sites listed for adoption is the iconic Shaniwar Wada, along with four other historic locations in Pune district: Aga Khan Palace, Pataleshwar Caves, Karla-Bhaja Caves, and Lohagad Fort.

The "Adopt a Heritage" initiative allows private institutions and companies to adopt these sites for their preservation and maintenance. However, this move has been met with sharp criticism from Pune's residents, who have raised concerns about the implications of such a scheme.

Some locals have sarcastically questioned whether adopting Shaniwar Wada is akin to "adopting one's own child," while others have expressed skepticism about the government’s financial capacity to maintain these historic treasures, despite the taxes collected from citizens.

Historians, however, have shown support for the initiative, emphasizing that it could lead to better upkeep and conservation of these ancient sites.

Historian Pandurang Balkawade noted that the demand for such a scheme has been ongoing for over two decades, but he also stressed the importance of ensuring that these historical structures are not damaged in the process.

On the political front, the decision has sparked controversy, with Member of Parliament Supriya Sule vocally opposing the plan. Sule criticized the central government for what she perceives as an attempt to lease out national heritage sites under the pretext of adoption.

In a strongly worded statement, she condemned the government for what she termed the "sale of our heritage and history," demanding the immediate withdrawal of the scheme.

The debate over the adoption of Shaniwar Wada and other heritage sites in Pune highlights the ongoing tension between the preservation of cultural heritage and the involvement of private entities in public assets.
