Pune: An unusual event occurred in the small village of Domewadi near Otur, Junnar Taluka, when a large ice ball fell from the sky.
Local residents were startled when the massive chunk of ice, estimated to weigh between 30 and 40 kilograms, plummeted into a soybean field owned by Babaji Wajge at approximately 12:30 PM on Monday (September 23) afternoon.
Field workers were the first to spot the mysterious ice ball, which had created a significant impact upon hitting the ground. Intrigued by the rare sight, a group of children from the village picked up some of the ice to play with, leading to curiosity and excitement.
Within no time, the news spread across the village, drawing a crowd of onlookers to the field.
Local authorities were notified of the incident, and by 2:30 PM, Revenue Officer Vijay Phalke, Talathi Atul Vibhute, and staff member Sandeep Raut arrived on the scene to assess the situation.
However, by the time they arrived, the large ice ball had already melted. All that remained was a small puddle of water and a crater, evidence of the object’s impact on the ground.
While such incidents are rare, falling ice chunks from the atmosphere, also known as megacryometeors, have been recorded in other parts of the world.
These unusual occurrences often result in large chunks of ice breaking off from the atmosphere under specific weather conditions. The exact cause of this incident in Domewadi remains unknown, and the event has left the local community both surprised and curious.
Officials are now considering the possible reasons behind the sudden fall of the ice ball and whether it could be attributed to unusual weather phenomena or atmospheric changes.
For now, the incident continues to be a topic of conversation and speculation among the residents of Otur and nearby areas.
