Pune: Severe rainstorms have been pounding Pune, prompting the deployment of an Army Relief Column to Ekta Nagar to address the flooding in vulnerable areas.
The relief effort is spearheaded by over 100 personnel, including Infantry Troops, a specialized Engineer Task Force from the Bombay Engineers Group (BEG), and medical staff from MH Khadki.
Equipped with rescue boats, drones, and other crucial tools, this team is prepared to provide immediate aid and work towards restoring normalcy amid the continuous downpour. Additional relief teams are on standby for further support.
Following a warning from the India Meteorological Department, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has directed the Pune district administration to be on high alert as more heavy rain is forecasted for today.
He has mandated the immediate relocation of residents in high-risk areas near rivers and dams to safer locations. The Chief Minister also stressed the importance of involving the NDRF, SDRF, and military personnel if needed. Moreover, it is crucial to ensure that relocated individuals have access to shelters, clothing, and food supplies.
Water release from Khadakwasla, Mulshi, and Pavana dams has begun, heightening the risk of flooding in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad’s low-lying regions.
Areas affected include Ektanagari, Dattawadi, Patil Estate, Yerawada, Shivaji Nagar Court area, Kamgar Statue, Harris Bridge, Dapodi, Old Sangvi, Kasarwadi, Pimpri Camp, Ravet, Balewadi Gaothan, Jupiter Hospital area, Kapil Malhar area, Baner, Bavdhan, and Sangamwadi.
The Chief Minister has instructed the administration to ensure the safety of residents in these regions.
All administrative efforts are being coordinated to facilitate the safe relocation of residents and to provide all necessary amenities at shelter centers. Effective communication of Meteorological Department updates to the public is essential, and the Chief Minister has underscored the need for vigilance to prevent hardships for the community.
