Pune: In a tragic accident on Karve Road, a retired agriculture officer lost his life after being struck by a speeding dumper at the Rasashala Junction on Monday (August 19).
The victim, identified as 60-year-old Sunil Bhaskarrao Deshmukh, was a resident of Niko Garden in Viman Nagar. Deshmukh, who had recently retired from the Agriculture Department, was on his way to Nal Stop Junction for work when the accident occurred.
The dumper, driven by 35-year-old Sunil Babu Hole from Gokhale Nagar, hit Deshmukh's two-wheeler from behind as he was passing through Ras Shala Junction around 12:30 PM.
Police Sub-Inspector Mahesh Bhosale from Deccan police station arrived at the scene shortly after the incident. Despite being rushed to the hospital with severe head injuries, Deshmukh was declared dead upon arrival. The dumper driver was detained at the scene and later arrested by the police.
The incident, which occurred on Raksha Bandhan, has left the community in shock. The Deccan Police have registered a case against the dumper driver involved.
This accident follows a similar incident on Karve Road two months ago, where a retired officer from the Water Resources Department was killed after being struck by a dumper while cycling.
Recently, a police officer had apprehended a car driver identified as Shubham Gupta after he was found driving under the influence of alcohol. He was stopped in front of Savarkar Memorial by a vigilant Assistant Police Inspector from Yerawada Police Station. Due to the timely intervention by the police, a major mishap was prevented in the Deccan locality.
