Pune: Rupali Chakankar, Chairperson of the State Women's Commission and leader of the Ajit Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party, strongly criticized NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) MP Supriya Sule for her recent site visit to Bopdev Ghat, where a gang rape incident took place.
Sule visited the site with senior leader Sharad Pawar and police officials. Chakankar questioned the necessity of the visit, calling it a political stunt and accusing Sule of defaming Pune.
Supriya Sule visited Bopdev Ghat to assess the crime scene of the sexual assault that shocked the city. After the visit, Sule expressed concern over the rising number of crimes in Pune and criticized the Home Ministry for failing to curb the increasing crime rates.
She pointed to various incidents, such as drug trafficking in Sassoon Hospital and the mishandling of evidence in the Porsche car accident case, as indicators of the city's worsening crime situation.
Responding to Sule’s remarks, Chakankar posted on social media in which she asked why Sule felt the need to conduct such an inspection when the police were already investigating the matter. She questioned whether this was an attempt by Sule to garner sympathy from her constituents, accusing her of politicizing a tragic incident.
Chakankar further brought up other cases involving leaders associated with Sule’s party, such as the arrest of former MLA Bhanudas Murkute on charges of sexual harassment and an incident involving the sexual abuse of a minor by a youth leader. She asked when Supriya Sule would address these issues with the same intensity she showed at Bopdev Ghat.
