Pune: A 13-year-old girl diagnosed with Pott's Spine, a rare form of spinal tuberculosis, has fully regained her mobility just 15 days after undergoing surgery at Sahyadri Super Speciality Hospital, Deccan Gymkhana.
The procedure was led by Dr. Rajesh Parasnis, Spine Surgeon, whose swift intervention ensured a positive outcome.
The young patient initially experienced severe upper back pain for two months, which eventually led to paraplegia and loss of movement in her lower limbs despite undergoing anti-tubercular therapy (AKT) and bed rest at a government hospital.
Upon being admitted to Sahyadri Hospital, a comprehensive evaluation confirmed the diagnosis through MRI, clinical examination, and a surgical biopsy. The medical team utilized the GeneXpert MTB test for precise detection of the infection.
Understanding the critical nature of the patient’s condition, Dr. Parasnis performed an urgent D1-D6 Dorsal Decompression, Debridement, and Pedicle Screw Fixation surgery to relieve the pressure on the spinal cord and stabilize the spine.
Advanced technologies like O-arm Navigation and intra-operative neuro-monitoring were employed to maximize surgical precision and safety.
Following surgery, the patient’s recovery was carefully managed, involving daily neurological checks, pain management, and a structured physiotherapy program. Within five days, she was able to stand and walk with support, and by the fifteenth day, she was walking independently.
One month after the surgery, the patient was completely pain-free, with fully restored neurological function. Dr. Parasnis emphasized that early surgical intervention was critical in preventing permanent damage and achieving a full recovery.
