Pune: The redevelopment of Sarasbaug Chowpatty, recognized as a 'Clean Street Food Hub' by the state government, continues to face delays despite receiving in-principle approval for a new plan.
Eight months after the revised proposal was sanctioned, progress on the ground remains stagnant, with the project still confined to discussions on paper.
Sarasbaug Chowpatty, a popular destination for tourists visiting Pune, has long been a culinary hotspot. After visiting the iconic 'Ganpati in the Lake' temple, food enthusiasts often gather at this chowpatty to indulge in local delicacies. It also serves as a favored dining spot for travelers, students, and late-night office workers.
In 2019, the state government awarded Sarasbaug Chowpatty the status of a 'Clean Street Food Hub.' However, rising concerns over encroachments led the Pune Municipal Corporation's (PMC) Encroachment Department to seal several unauthorized stalls. This action reignited discussions about the chowpatty's redevelopment.
The PMC subsequently sought architectural plans for the project, with one proposal receiving approval. However, work was abruptly halted, prompting revisions to the original plan. In December 2023, the revised plan was finally approved by the PMC's Estimate Committee.
The redevelopment plan includes the closure of the road leading to Sarasbaug Chowpatty, necessitating further adjustments to the development blueprint. A presentation on the project is scheduled for next week before Municipal Commissioner Dr. Rajendra Bhosale, after which work on the redevelopment is expected to commence.
Budget Escalates: From 8 Crores to 18 Crores
The estimated cost of the redevelopment has ballooned from an initial 8 crore rupees to 18.50 crore rupees. Despite the increase in budget, the project has yet to break ground.
"A presentation on the Sarasbaug Chowpatty redevelopment will be made to Municipal Commissioner Dr. Rajendra Bhosale next week. Following that, the work will begin," said Madhav Jagtap, Head of the Encroachment Department at the PMC.
Key Features of the Sarasbaug 'Food Court Area':
The redevelopment includes 78 stalls across two floors, with 54 on the ground floor and 24 on the first floor.
After rehabilitating 54 authorized vendors, the remaining stalls will be auctioned.
The area will feature attractive paintwork, lighting, and special seating arrangements for customers.
Underground parking will accommodate 200 vehicles, with entrances on both sides of the facility.
