Mumbai: The Dharavi Bachao Andolan (Save Dharavi Movement) is preparing to ramp up its protests against the Adani Group and Dharavi Redevelopment Project Private Limited (DRPPL) after a secret foundation stone-laying ceremony was conducted for the Dharavi redevelopment project. This move has angered the residents of Dharavi, who had already been opposing the project.

The controversy arose after DRPPL held a foundation ceremony on September 12 for the construction of buildings on railway land for railway employees, without informing the public or the local residents.

The residents and activists have accused DRPPL of carrying out the event unlawfully and in secrecy. According to the Dharavi Bachao Andolan, this clandestine ceremony took place the day after the group had called off a symbolic hunger strike they had launched to disrupt the event.

The protest was withdrawn after DRPPL informed the police that the ceremony had been canceled. However, it is alleged that DRPPL went ahead with the event the very next morning.

Residents of Dharavi have long opposed the redevelopment plan led by the Adani Group, demanding larger homes of 500 square feet, as opposed to the 350 square feet proposed.

Despite these demands and the lack of approval for the final project layout, the secret ceremony has further intensified the residents' frustration.

The Dharavi Bachao Andolan has now vowed to escalate the protest, planning a significant movement to unite citizens from across Mumbai, including areas like Mulund and Kurla, where opposition to Adani also exists.

A crucial meeting is scheduled within the week to finalize the plan for the protest march. The organization aims to gather a large number of people to demonstrate after the Ganesh festival, with the objective of pressuring the authorities to address their demands.
