Pune: A young man drowned, and a young girl is missing after both slipped into the Indrayani River while taking selfies on Thursday (September 5). The tragic incident occured at Kundmala near Indori in Maval Taluka.

The deceased has been identified as Rohan Dnyaneshwar Thombre (22), a resident of Chinchwadgaon and employed at a private company. The missing girl, Shreya Suresh Gawade (17), is also a resident of Chinchwadgaon and a student in the eleventh grade.

The accident occurred when a group of eight friends, consisting of six boys and two girls from Chinchwadgaon, visited Kundmala at around 8 AM for an outing.

Rohan and Shreya were taking selfies near the riverbank close to a local temple when they lost their footing and fell into the river. Their friends immediately shouted for help, prompting local residents to rush to the scene.

The Talegaon-MIDC Police Station was quickly notified of the incident, and rescue teams, including Maval wildlife protectors and disaster response teams, were deployed to conduct a search operation.

Despite the teams' efforts throughout the day, they only managed to recover Rohan's body around 4:30 PM. The search for Shreya continued into the late evening, but was suspended due to darkness.

Rescue operations are expected to resume early Friday (September 6) morning in hopes of locating Shreya.

Local authorities have urged the public to exercise caution near water bodies and avoid risky activities like taking selfies near the edge of rivers. This tragic incident highlights the potential dangers and underscores the need for awareness and preventive measures.
