Shirur-Chaufula Highway: Local Businessman Dies in Accident Due to Incomplete Work
Pune: A tragic accident occurred on the Shirur-Chaufula highway, claiming the life of 37-year-old Nitin Gopalbhai Patel, a local businessman. Patel, who owned Pragati Trader in Chaufula, was returning home around 8:30 PM when his motorcycle skidded over a pile of dirt left unmarked by reflectors.
The accident, which occurred in the dark, resulted in a fatal head injury. He was declared dead at a nearby private hospital before any medical intervention could take place.
The incident has sparked outrage among local residents, who blame the National Highway Authority for negligence. The highway, which is under construction with a deadline of August 2024, remains incomplete in many sections.
Local citizens have pointed out that the contractor responsible for the construction failed to install necessary safety measures, including reflectors and signage, leading to frequent accidents. Despite complaints, no action has been taken against the contractor.
The highway is crucial as it serves 10 private hospitals and 5 large private schools, making the ongoing work delays particularly disruptive. Traffic congestion and hazardous conditions have made travel on this route challenging, with several accidents resulting in permanent disabilities. National Highway Sub-Engineer Prerna Kotkar acknowledged the delays, attributing them to opposition in certain areas, and expressed concern over the situation.
The funeral of Patel, who was the sole breadwinner of his family, was marked by the heartbreaking grief of his parents, wife, and two young children. Local residents have demanded compensation for the family from the authorities responsible.
