Pune: The flyover at Rajaram Bridge Junction on Sinhagad Road is almost ready, but it remains closed despite demands from citizens to open it for traffic. Pune Municipal Commissioner Dr. Rajendra Bhosale inspected the flyover today, but a decision on its opening is still pending.
The flyover, constructed to reduce traffic congestion between Rajaram Bridge and Fun Time Theater, is nearly complete, with only the final asphalt layer left. Continuous rains have halted this work as the asphalt plant is closed due to wet gravel, according to project officials.
Meanwhile, the electrical system, painting, and installation of direction boards on the flyover have been completed. Minor works such as placing cat's eyes and road markings remain.
Local citizens and political party workers are demanding the flyover be opened. Opposition members previously accused that the flyover is not being opened because Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is scheduled to inaugurate it.
This morning, the Municipal Commissioner inspected the flyover and understood the challenges in laying the 50 mm layer. He also inquired whether the bridge could be used without this layer, but no final decision has been made, administrative sources said.
Laying the 50 mm asphalt layer during the monsoon can cause the road to deteriorate quickly, resulting in potholes. This could lead to immediate criticism of the municipality by the citizens. Therefore, the work is not being carried out during the rains.
However, as the rains have not ceased and the gravel remains wet, the asphalt plant is shut down. Sources mentioned that it is possible to open the flyover for traffic now and lay the asphalt layer after the monsoon.
