Pune: Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has raised concerns over the encroachment on natural rivers, streams, and rivulets, where debris is being dumped, causing environmental hazards.
In a stern message to construction professionals, Pawar urged them to avoid encroaching on these natural watercourses. He also revealed that the government is considering a proposal to allocate six FSI (Floor Space Index) for the rehabilitation of flood-affected Ekta Nagari on Sinhagad Road.
The Deputy Chief Minister made these remarks while inaugurating a 520-meter-long flyover at Rajaram Chowk on Sinhagad Road on August 15.
The ceremony was attended by prominent figures including MP Dr. Medha Kulkarni, MLAs Madhuri Misal and Bhimrao Tapkir, State Women’s Commission Chairperson Rupali Chakankar, and Pune Municipal Commissioner Dr. Rajendra Bhosale.
Pawar noted that the rapid increase in the city’s population, driven by the inclusion of nearby villages and the rise in employment and educational opportunities, has exacerbated traffic problems.
To tackle these issues, he said, a metro network is under development, and he has directed municipal authorities, including PMRDA and PCMC, as well as the police, to devise plans to alleviate congestion.
In her speech, MLA Madhuri Misal highlighted the ongoing construction of a 2.5 km flyover on Sinhagad Road, stretching from Rajaram Bridge Chowk to Fun Time Multiplex.
She assured the public that the remaining work would be completed by March, acknowledging the temporary inconveniences faced by residents during the construction.
During the event, Pawar also announced that the "Ladki Bahin" scheme would see funds deposited into the bank accounts of 1.25 crore women by August 17.
