Pune: A tragic hit-and-run incident at Swargate claimed the life of 34-year-old Chartered Accountant Sagar Suresh Mantri on Tuesday (July 9) morning.
The accident, which occurred at around 11:30 AM at the grade separator in Swargate, has raised serious concerns about road safety in the area. The absence of CCTV cameras at the grade separator has made it difficult to determine the exact circumstances of the accident. However, footage from cameras on either side of the grade separator has been seized for further investigation.
Sagar, a resident of Akshar Altorius Park, Hadapsar, was on his way to his office in Bhavani Peth when his motorcycle was struck from behind by an unidentified vehicle.
Despite being rushed to a private hospital in the Deccan area by the Swargate traffic police, he succumbed to his injuries. His body has been sent to Sassoon Hospital for an autopsy.
Sagar, originally from Ahilyanagar, had settled in Pune for his business. He is survived by his parents, wife, a six-month-old daughter, and a brother. This tragic incident has left his young daughter fatherless.
Sagar's brother, Ashish Mantri, has lodged a complaint, leading to a case being registered against the unknown driver at the Swargate Police Station. Both Sagar and Ashish are Chartered Accountants by profession.
The severity of the accident left Sagar with fatal head injuries, causing significant blood loss. The rear of his motorcycle was heavily damaged, suggesting a powerful impact from behind.
Consecutive Hit and Run Incidents Stir Public Outcry
This incident follows another hit and run that killed a police personnel in the Bopodi area on Sunday (July 7) midnight. The back-to-back incidents have prompted Pune residents to demand stricter measures to curb reckless driving and ensure road safety.
Assistant Inspector Ashwini Bavche from Swargate Police Station stated, "We are thoroughly investigating the incident using available CCTV footage and other evidence to identify and apprehend the responsible driver."
