Pimpri: In a heartwarming gesture, Tata Motors credited Diwali bonuses to its workers within 24 hours of the funeral of Tata Group Chairman Ratan Tata, who passed away on October 9.
The workers, deeply moved by the gesture, became emotional upon receiving the bonus amidst the Tata family’s period of mourning.
Ratan Tata, a towering figure in Indian industry, died on Wednesday night, and his funeral took place on Thursday. The company’s management decided to credit a bonus of ₹49,000 to nearly 10,000 permanent workers' accounts, despite the somber occasion.
Contracted workers also received bonuses as per the terms of their contracts. This act of generosity, occurring just days before Diwali, lifted the spirits of the workers, making the festival more meaningful despite the surrounding grief.
For the first time in the history of Tata Motors' Pimpri plant, the Khandenavami festival was not celebrated. Instead, the workers gathered to pay their respects to Ratan Tata.
The plant employs around 40,000 workers in total, including 10,000 permanent employees and 30,000 contracted workers. The decision to distribute the Diwali bonus on time, even while the company mourns the loss of its leader, was seen as a mark of respect and care for the employees.
Union President Shishupal Tomar remarked, “The management credited the Diwali bonus into the workers' accounts within 24 hours of the final rites for our revered leader. Receiving this bonus during such a sad time has made the workers even more emotional.”
