Pune: Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone IV) Himmat Jadhav has suspended three police constables in connection with the escape of an accused involved in a MCOCA (Maharashtra Control of Organized Crime Act) case by slipping out of his handcuffs while being transported back to the Yerawada Police Station following a medical examination.
The suspended officers have been identified as Police Constables Sushant Rajendra Bhosale, Vittal Bappaji Ghule, and Suraj Hirachand Ombase.
The incident unfolded on October 21, when Nikhil Madhukar Kamble (28), an accused held in connection with organized crime, complained of severe stomach pain from the lockup at the Yerawada Police Station.
As per protocol, he was taken to Sassoon Hospital for a medical examination, accompanied by two other detainees. After the examination, the police officers began escorting the trio back to the police station.
During the return journey, Kamble started complaining of significant discomfort around the Gunjan Chowk area, asking the officers to stop for water. He claimed his condition was worsening, adding urgency to his request.
The officers halted the vehicle around 9:45 p.m. to get water, providing Kamble with the opportunity he needed. Seizing the moment, Kamble managed to free his left hand from the handcuff, opened the car door, and fled the scene.
In the wake of the escape, the Pune Police Department swiftly took disciplinary action against the officers responsible, citing their negligent handling of the detainee.
In a statement, officials emphasized the importance of strict adherence to duty in a disciplined department like the police force.
The officers’ actions were deemed irresponsible and in violation of the department's expectations, leading to their immediate suspension.
