Pune: The National Medical Council (NMC) has cancelled the registration of two resident doctors from Sassoon General Hospital for six months after they were found guilty of abandoning a destitute patient in a remote location.
Additionally, one academic term has been nullified as per the recommendations of an inquiry committee submitted to the Commissioner of the Medical Education Department.
The incident had stirred public outrage. The case was actively followed up by Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi activist Ritesh Gaikwad and social worker Dadasaheb Gaikwad, leading to the formation of a three-member inquiry committee. The committee, upon completing its investigation, has now submitted its report.
In addition to the registration cancellation, the committee has recommended that the two doctors be expelled from the hostel for six months.
"The inquiry committee's report on the abandonment of the unattended patient has been submitted. A decision on the committee's recommendations will be made soon," stated Dr. Eknath Pawar, Dean of Sassoon General Hospital.
On the night of July 22, a 32-year-old destitute patient from the orthopedics department was abandoned in an isolated area. Dr. Aadi Kumar was suspended immediately following the incident.
An inquiry committee was formed by the hospital’s dean to investigate further. The second doctor, a first-year junior resident in the orthopedics department, was also seen in CCTV footage taking the patient outside the building with the help of other doctors. There was no evidence of involvement from nurses or other staff members.
