Pune: On Monday (September 30), a UNESCO delegation visited Lohagad Fort in the Maval Taluka of Pune district, Maharashtra, as part of the process of evaluating its nomination for inclusion in the prestigious World Heritage Sites list.
The fort, which is one of the 12 chosen forts tied to the legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, is under consideration for global recognition.
This inclusion would bring international prestige and attract global tourists, potentially boosting the local economy and promoting tourism in the region.
The nomination for Lohagad Fort, along with other historic forts like Shivneri, Raigad, and Suvarnadurg, was proposed by the Indian government.
Lohagad Fort, renowned for its architectural grandeur and historical significance, was built during the reign of Shivaji Maharaj. Its strategic importance and unique design make it an important site for conservation and tourism development.
The UNESCO team, along with officials from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), Maharashtra state archaeology, forest department, and local administration, conducted a thorough inspection of the fort.
Over the course of three and a half hours, they visited various historic landmarks, including the iconic Ganesh, Maha, and Hanuman gates, ancient temples, fortifications, water reservoirs, and other significant points. The team received detailed explanations from the ASI officers on the fort's history and current condition.
During the visit, the delegation also interacted with local representatives and villagers, facilitated by a translator. They discussed the fort’s weather patterns, vegetation, and other relevant environmental factors.
The villagers shared insights into initiatives undertaken in connection with the UNESCO nomination, showcasing the community's involvement in preserving the fort.
The UNESCO team expressed their appreciation for the hospitality and shared feedback on potential improvements to the site’s maintenance and conservation.
The local community, recognizing the significance of the UNESCO visit, organized a small ceremony to honor the delegation. This visit marks a significant step forward in the fort’s journey toward achieving World Heritage Site status, a recognition that could enhance its global profile and provide long-term benefits for the local economy.
