In Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, the online admission process for 11th grade has concluded, revealing a significant increase in vacant seats. Over 42,000 seats remain unfilled across junior colleges in these municipal areas.
The education department recently finalized the admissions for this academic year, which included a total of 120,805 seats available in 343 junior colleges.
Out of these, 104,160 seats were allocated for centralized admission, and 16,645 were reserved under various quotas.
To ensure maximum enrollment, the process included three regular rounds, six special rounds, and additional daily merit rounds. By the end of the admission process, a total of 78,618 students had secured seats.
Among these, 9,400 admissions were made under reserved quotas, while 69,218 were completed through the centralized admission system.
However, despite these efforts, 42,187 seats remained vacant. According to website data, this includes 34,942 seats left unfilled in the centralized admissions and 7,245 in the reserved quota.
Statistics indicate that among the completed admissions, 7,390 students enrolled in the Arts stream, 29,819 in Commerce, 39,643 in Science, and 1,766 in vocational courses.
Over recent years, there has been a consistent decline in the percentage of 11th-grade admissions, with around 30,000 seats remaining vacant each year.
Contributing factors include an increase in seat availability due to new college approvals and the addition of extra divisions. However, enrollment has not kept pace, resulting in an increase in the percentage of vacant seats annually.
