Pune: Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has announced plans to construct a two-story elevated corridor from Viman Nagar to Shirur through a public-private partnership (PPP) model. This initiative aims to address the severe traffic congestion in Pune, which has escalated with the city’s rapid growth.
During the Jan Sanman Yatra in Wadgaon Sheri, Ajit Pawar addressed the gathering. He interacted with residents, officials, and social organizations from Viman Nagar. The event was attended by NCP State President Sunil Tatkare, MLA Sunil Tingre, and Rupali Chakankar.
Citizens raised several issues including severe traffic congestion at Viman Nagar Chowk, where it takes half an hour to cover a distance that should take five minutes.
They reported encroachments on footpaths and roads in the Viman Nagar area, with people drinking alcohol outside wine shops during the day. They also highlighted irregular garbage collection and an increase in stray dogs.
Due to space constraints at Lohegaon Airport on Nagar Road, a new terminal was constructed at a cost of ₹500 crore, which has alleviated some traffic congestion. However, the remaining BRT system continues to cause traffic issues.
Ajit Pawar instructed Municipal Commissioner Rajendra Bhosale to urgently make decisions regarding the remaining BRT and address the problems of garbage, encroachments, and traffic congestion affecting suburban residents.
Pawar listened attentively to the citizens' grievances and immediately contacted Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) Commissioner Dr. Rajendra Bhosale, urging him to implement swift and effective solutions.
Among the concerns highlighted was the severe problem of stray dogs, which has led to multiple incidents of injuries, particularly to children. While some residents expressed a desire to curb the menace, others, who are dog lovers, argued for a balanced approach.
